Groupon Responded To Me Regarding Their Decision to Pull Gun Related Deals

20130126-113032.jpg

I did write Groupon a letter, telling them to close my account and reminding them that they could have chosen to be a portal to firearms education rather than a road block. They did reply:

Hi Lil’ Chantilly (well, ok – they used my real name…)

I apologize for the delay in responding! We’re currently experiencing an unusually high volume of requests, but we are working hard to get back to everyone as soon as we can.

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us.

We understand that this is a sensitive topic, and that some of our customers may not agree with our choice to pause the promotion of firearm-related deals. Groupon has always aimed to offer a diverse range of products and services to meet the various tastes and interests of our subscribers. However, at this time, enough customers and merchants have voiced their opinions that we believe a hiatus is warranted.

Please note that we have never sold guns, and this hiatus only applies to firearm-related deals including shooting ranges, clay pigeon shooting, and concealed weapons training classes. We have not made a final determination regarding this category — we are simply taking a break and may reevaluate in the future.

Per your request, I’ve unsubscribed this email address. You will stop receiving Groupon promotional emails within 48 hours. I can also close your account, but I want to be sure you’re aware that once it is closed, you will no longer be able to access previously purchased vouchers on Groupon.com, and any existing Groupon Bucks will be voided. Please let me know if you would like to proceed.

We genuinely appreciate your opinion and the feedback you’ve given us. I’ll be sure to share your comments with the appropriate people.

Regards,

How Does Stored Ammunition React in a House Fire?

Screen Shot 2013-01-08 at 9.39.20 PMIf you are a firefighter or if you just have ammunition stored in your house – this is a very interesting video. It was created by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, Inc. (SAAMI). Go to their website here.  Those of you who are very knowledgable about firearms and ammo will not be surprised (or maybe you will), but those who have less understanding about firing process might have your eyes opened on this one.  It is rather long – but extremely educational!

Preschoolers learn about gun safety

Screen Shot 2013-01-08 at 8.57.16 PM“We have television, movies and video games that are so violent,” Gresham said. “Children of this age do not realize the finality of death because when they see someone die on television, they see them in another program the next week. They just don’t really understand it yet.”

Officer Daisy Haywood, known as Officer Friendly to the TECC kids, of the Jacksonville Police Department, comes in once a month to teach different characteristics, according to James Lanier of TECC.

This month’s characteristic is responsibility, so Gresham worked with JPD to get the program to her school. The program was scheduled in November.

New York newspaper to list more gun permit holders after uproar

Angry Mob

Angry Mob

I was sitting in Colorado on Christmas Eve, a glass of wine, snow falling all around me when I heard about the New York Newspaper, The Journal, and their decision to post the names and addresses of people who held permits to purchase weapons.

This made me sick to my stomach.  Yes, they obtained information publicly available, and they have 1st Amendment rights to the freedom of speech.  What did they do wrong then?  After reading some of their editorial articles and the article that accompanied this initial interactive map, it is clear they were trying to “out” gun owners and spark fear in the neighborhoods.  If there were only one potential gun owner in a neighborhood, perhaps the other neighbors could now show up at their front door with pitchforks and torches and demand they give up their guns.  Is that what the Journal wants?

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 1.40.36 PM

This was, in truth, a violation of privacy.  It was irresponsible journalism, if you can call it journalism at all.  At the very best it is sensational, at the worst it is downright dangerous for everyone in those communities.  Here are the possible outcomes:

1.  Best Outcome – Nothing Changes (unlikely)

2.  Criminals know who may not have a gun, the people this article hoped to “help” by letting them know which neighbors had guns so they could “deal with them” will now become targets of violence.  Hey, if I was a criminal, I would go to homes of people with no protection.  “Thank you Journal, you just made my life safer.” ~signed evil rapist.

3.  Criminals who do not have a gun, but need a gun and cannot get one (due to the thousands of laws already in place) now know exactly where to go to get one.  (Obviously, they will wait until no one is home.)  Easy day.  “Thank you Journal, you just made my life easier.” ~signed evil thief.

4.  Worst outcome – you have now put neighbor against neighbor and may incite actual fights and violence within these neighborhoods due to your irresponsibility.  This country already has enough dividing us, we do not need any encouragement.

Then today I read this article: New York newspaper to list more gun permit holders after uproar by Reuters.  They are not finished, they are going to publish more.  God help anyone affected by this – and by that I mean those with guns and those without.  I fear those without have more to fear.

Do you have cover from gunfire in your home?

Wow, today I found a new gun-blog, Looserounds.com. They posted a article titled, “What is “Cover” in your home. And will it Stop a rifle round? Lets find out.” He used an old abandoned home on his property and did various tests to see how a bullet or shrapnel penetrated various common appliances and other common “cover” in a home. Check it out – his findings are really interesting.

Gun Range Let’s People Shoot Other People

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to try your hand in an actual gun fight? I have read lots of books By Col. Jeff Cooper and others that try to prepare you for the reality of a gun battle. Still, how would YOU really react – how fast do things change, have you trained enough to perform under high stress? Well, you can get all these questions safely answered at COMBAT CITY USA.

Combat City USA has been all over the news the past couple of days, so many of you have probably already seen this video, or one like it. The reason I had to write about it today is because I was watching Fox and Friends this morning and Gretchen Carlson was appalled that this was allowed to happen. She was extremely upset that people were allowed to practice against real people in such a scenario. Has she never heard of laser tag, paint ball, air-soft, this is just another form. Combat City USA does have air-soft matches as well, but as you will see in the video, they they have matches that allow people to use their actual guns. This is better, because in your home – that is the gun you will have. Practice with the equipment you will be using. Even in the military, there are plenty of times when training is simulated but the best learning occurs when the training is as close to real life as possible.

I applaud Combat City USA and any other range with realistic training like this. They are located in Orlando, FL. Do any of you know of similar opportunities elsewhere in the country? I would love to give those places some press time too! (I have a feeling Combat City USA is going to be fully booked for awhile!)

Furniture Made for Hiding Your Gun!

Nightstand with secret gun compartment

Where do you place your gun when you want it to be accessible, but there are small children in the house?  There are a number of safes and other lock options.  Here is another idea: furniture with secret compartments for your gun.  Yes, they lock, and even have keyless entry options.  You can get versions like the night stand in the picture to the left or larger versions perfect for hiding a shotgun.

Watch the below video, you will see the designer, Richard Gilbert, of Richard Gilbert Industries.  He has a young granddaughter and awoke from a nightmare where he “saw” her climbing the chest of drawers where he kept his weapon, and knew he had to do something before that dream became a real life nightmare.

I appreciate any idea that involves beauty, guns, and most of all safety for those little minds and fingers!

Safety with ALL Guns – Even Nail Guns!

He jokes in this video, even calling himself “Dennis the Menace”.  Well, he was almost “Dennis the Missed”!  He was trying to clear his jammed nail gun, and turned it too much toward him when a 3 1/2 inch nail punctured his heart! Luckily, Dennis is still with us, but that was TOO close for comfort. Just like the nail gun fired when he was not ready, it can happen with a real gun as well. Always know where your firearm is pointing – even experienced people can grow too comfortable and become lax.

Heartbreaking Apology: PLEASE be responsible gun owners!

The 9-year-old boy who took a gun to school in Bremerton, WA back in February has written a letter of apology to his classmate, Amina Kocer-Bowman.  She just came home from the hospital yesterday after 41 days in the hospital and five sugeries.  Amina still has a feeding tube in her stomach and a .45-caliber bullet permanently lodged next to her spine.  She still has a long road to full recovery, and will not be the same.  The unnamed 9 year boy who shot her, will also never be the same.  This is one incident that was 100% preventable, not by a congressional action – but simply by a mom paying attention to both her child AND to her gun.  Read the apology letter for yourself.  As a mother, it breaks my heart for both children in very different ways.

Tell your children: “STOP! Don’t Touch!”

There have been too many reports of accidents with guns this week, which only gives those against armed citizens more ammunition to lobby for tighter gun laws.

A three year old little boy in Washington State killed himself a few days ago after he played with the gun his dad left in the truck with he got out to fill up the gas tank.

A nine year old boy in Bremerton, WA accidentally shot an eight year old girl, Amina Kocer-Bowman.  He obtained the firearm by removing it from his parents glove box in the car. He placed the .45 in his backpack, and it accidentally went off when he dropped the backpack on a desk.

In Littlerock, Arkansas, Police say that a 9-year-old girl with high functioning autism, pulled the trigger in the fatal shooting of her 7-year-old brother while their parents were briefly away from their apartment.  Their mom and dad had the guns in a back bedroom in a case of some kind.  They left to sign a lease and say they might have been gone for 10 minutes or so.
