Don’t Bring Race and Religion into my Gun Laws

I came across this article today in the Washington Post.  It gave me pause.  This article is quoting scripture, “Put away your sword,” Jesus commands, “for those who live by the sword, die by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52)  It is in response to the Trayvon Martin shooting and goes on to ask that we all “put down our guns” for Holy week.  Yes, I am a Christian, and yes, I believe in the 2nd Amendment.  This article challenges the fact that these two principles frequently are found in the same person.  How can a person be a Christian, and still believe in using a weapon that could end in a violent crime, that could take ones life?  I counter that if one is truly a Christian, they would never use their weapon to harm another human being unless there were no other choice.

The tragic shooting of this teen does break my heart, and still all the facts are not known – so I will not judge either side.  I only wish the country would take a breath and not use this case, with so much uncertainty, to polarize our country further than it already is.

Earlier today, I was listening to talk radio, and the conservative speaker was discussing that George Zimmerman is hispanic, but those who are more liberal are saying he is a “white hispanic”.  How about this argument:  Trayvon and George were both people.  They were in a community, they had family, they were humans.  They may have been Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, or Muslim.  They may have descended from African American, Brazilian, Portuguese, or Hispanic heritage.  In this country we have come so far over the course of 235+ years, to try a case such as this in the court of public opinion serves no purpose and only drives a wedge deeper.  George Zimmerman called the police over 50 times with concerns about people in his neighborhood.  If Trayvon had been a homeless man of Irish or Mexican decent, I have a feeling Mr. Zimmerman would have responded in a similar fashion (right or wrong).

It seems to me that too many follow like sheep walking to slaughter.  The media feeds them until they are too full and lulls them to a sleepy goodnight.  The politicians are waiting with open arms and promising to fix everything, “Don’t worry” they say, “I will take care of you.”  THINK people!  THINK!  Before it is too late and you find yourself wondering what happened to your country.  Both politicians and journalists use religion and race to strike fear and draw worst case scenarios.  The truth is usually somewhere in the middle, but you have to open you mind, your eyes – take in what is around you and form your very own opinion.  Never let someone else tell you what to think.

At the heart of the matter, we are all either good or evil.  No matter what race, what religion you practice, or if you own a gun.  You will find the eternal ying and yang in all parts of life.  I grow more concerned for our society when journalists use bible verses to encourage us to put our guns down.  I grow more weary when I see thousands of people in hooded sweatshirts marching in the name of race.  Let’s all remember we are American’s first, if we forget that, we will lose it all.

One Bad Apple: George Zimmerman

I have been holding my comments, waiting for more information to come out about the killing of the 17 year old boy, Trayvon Martin, in Sanford, Florida.  If you read this blog very often, you should know that I am very much in favor of the Castle Doctrine, and plan to eventually move to a state more in line with my overall values.  I am also a mother, with a (nearly) 16 year old daughter.  Sometimes she walks to 7-11 and gets her little brother some candy, just like Trayvon did that night.  My heart breaks for his family, for his mom and dad – I cannot even imagine.

Allegedly, Mr. Zimmerman told the police he shot the boy in self defense.  I also understand Trayvon was on the phone with a girl and was telling her he was being followed.  She told him to run.  By the time the police came Mr. Zimmerman had a wet back, like he had been on the grass and blood on the back of his head.  I am going to leave all of this to the Grand Jury to sort out.  I do not feel that any of us have enough information to convict Mr. Zimmerman, although I am sure we ALL have an opinion. In the News: Home Invasions This Weekend

Shooting of all kinds can be a challenging fun sport. But, when you get right down to it – we need our firearms to protect ourselves, especially as women. Even if a man were to enter our home unarmed (with ill intent) it would not be a fair fight. I found a few stories in the news, today alone, to remind us that this is a real threat:

1. This afternoon, here in San Diego, a woman and her three children were tied up by a man who entered her home to do harm. Once he tied them up, he tried to sit the house on fire. He must not have planned to start a fire, because it quickly went out and he fled. (He is still on the loose.)

2. at 1:15am this morning in Gaston, NC a woman named Lisa Goude called the police to report a breaking and entering in progress. The man tried to get in her front door, then went to the back and did enter. She shot him once, he continued to walk around her house holding his wound, she shot him again and killed him. This man may have been schizophrenic, but there was no time for a psychological examination before she fired. She did what she had to do.

3. In Davie County, NC a pair of men entered a home with the intent to commit robbery. they were armed with handguns. No one was home, but unfortunately, a house keeper did arrive during the crime. The men forced her inside and tried to get her to open a safe, when she could not, they put her under a staircase. She left after the men departed the premises and went next door and called the police. The criminals stole other firearms and are still on the loose tonight. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Davie County Sheriff’s Office at 336-751-6238.

4. This pair has been caught, but in Genesee County Michigan, a man and his occasional female accomplice were arrested today. They are suspected in about 30 (YES THIRTY) home invasions since November 2011.

5. In Rockford, Il a man was arrested after conducting a home invasion Thursday afternoon. The victim was a 52 year old male, and was battered by the suspect. The suspect fled and he was quickly apprehended by the Police.

Yes it’s Legal, but Will You Shoot?

Could you do it?

Anyone who owns a gun has thought about their plan, what they will do if this decision actually presents its self. You wake up, you hear something out in the living room. Did you lock that window? You cannot remember. You reach for your gun and feel the cold metal in your hand, your heart beats, you feel terror like you have never known. Your kids are in their rooms, can you get everyone out before the intruder tries to stop you? You chamber a round as quietly as possible, and take cover behind the edge of your bed. Foot steps come down the hallway, toward your door. You aim toward the door, it is him or your kids. What do you do?

I heard a radio talk show show discussing this topic today, and found it fascinating. I never doubted what I would do – but, the callers brought up so many good points that I am now slightly wavering on my 100% certain plan. What would you do? What is your plan? Why is that your plan? Read more
